Spelling

In my classroom we will take a pre-test every Monday unless there is no school due to weather or a holiday in which case it will be taken on Tuesday. The pre-test will be scored and, depending on the score, your child may be on the regular list or the challenge list. The pre-test will come home the same day it was taken and have either the regular list or challenge list stapled to it so you know which words to study throughout the week.

***Regular List--students will remain on the regular list if they spell more than 2 words incorrect.

***Challenge List--students will move to the challenge list if they spell less than 2 words incorrect.

Each Friday we will take our post-test in spelling. Your child should have studied the list of words that was stapled to his/her pre-test from the beginning of the week.

Practicing the Words

**One way you may have your child practice is by utilizing a website called Spelling City. This site allows me to enter the spelling words for each list. Students can then learn the words, practice the words by playing games as well as take a practice test.

Below are some other ideas for practicing spelling words throughout the week.

1) Write, Write, Write: Have your student write his/her spelling words correctly on a piece of paper. However, this shouldn't be the only strategy as it may not only create resistance from your child wanting to practice his/her words but it may prevent students from truly understanding the word.

2) Sentences: Have your child write his/her spelling word in a sentence. Not just orally tell you the word but actually write it down. Your child needs to see the word spelled correctly over and over to improve mental memory of the word. Even if other words in the sentence are spelled incorrectly, ensure that the spelling word is spelled correctly.

3) Mirror Words: Have your child write a dictated spelling word. After writing it down, you as a parent check to see if the word was spelled correctly. If the word is spelled incorrectly, have your child try the word again directly beneath the word. You may offer up the letter or letters that are spelled incorrect. Look at the sample below.

4) Missing Letter: write the spelling word for your child but leave out a letter from the word. Have your child write the correct missing letter.

5) Unscramble: scramble up your child's spelling words. Have him/her unscramble the words and write them correctly. For example, plsmae would be unscrambled to make sample.
